murder

A bitter wind fingers

the grey feathers

on the breast

of a small hawk

hunkered low

in a leafless tree.

Four crows jostle

and squawk

in the branches above.

The hawk heaves

into sudden flight.

The crows scramble

in rough pursuit

screaming.
